Smart Lighting

One dimmer, one scene, the whole room obeys.

Lutron Caseta for retrofits, Lutron RadioRA 2 and HomeWorks for premium whole-home. Pico remotes, scene programming, LED-compatibility verification, and Alexa / Google / HomeKit pairing — all on one bid by a C-10 crew.

What This Is

Lighting that responds to the room, not the toggle.

Smart lighting is the highest-leverage piece of any smart-home install. It is the layer the household interacts with every day — every walk through a doorway, every "movie tonight," every late-night kitchen trip. Get it right and the rest of the smart-home experience inherits the quality. Get it wrong (the bulbs flicker, the app times out, the dimmer hums) and the household stops trusting any of it.

YKCA installs Lutron — Caseta for retrofits, RadioRA 2 and HomeWorks for whole-home builds. We size every dimmer to its actual load, verify LED compatibility before turnover, and program the scenes with the homeowner present so the "Movie" button does what they actually want it to do.

Scope

What is included in a smart-lighting install.

Same crew specs the gear, pulls the load calc, and programs the system before turnover. Single bid, single accountable contractor.

Caseta Dimmers + Pico Remotes

Wireless wall dimmers replace existing switches one-for-one. Pico remotes mount anywhere — wall, bedside, coffee table — and trigger scenes without re-wiring.

RadioRA 2 / HomeWorks (premium)

Hardwired-leaning whole-home control for larger residences: in-wall keypads, occupancy sensors, daylight sensors, motorized shade coordination.

Scene Programming

We sit with the homeowner and design 4-8 scenes per zone — Welcome, Cooking, Dinner, Movie, Bedtime, Goodbye, plus custom. Programmed before turnover.

Smart Bulb Integration

For Hue / LIFX / WiZ accent fixtures: paired into the lighting controller so wall dimmers and voice commands work together, not against each other.

LED Compatibility Verification

We size the dimmer to the load, confirm bulb compatibility, and replace mismatched LED + dimmer pairs that cause flicker, hum, or pop-on issues.

Ecosystem Pairing

Lutron bridge paired with Alexa, Google Home, and / or Apple HomeKit. Voice control and cross-vendor routines tested before turnover.

Equipment We Spec

Lutron Caseta and RadioRA — selected per room.

Brand-agnostic where it matters (smart bulbs, third-party Pico-compatible switches), Lutron-loyal where it counts (the dimmer controlling the actual load on your circuit).

Caseta Diva Smart Dimmer

Retrofit standard, neutral or no-neutral options

Caseta Smart Fan Speed Control

Ceiling-fan retrofit, 3-speed

Pico Smart Remote

Wall-mount or tabletop, scenes / dim / off

RadioRA 2 Maestro Dimmer

In-wall, multi-location, occupancy-sensor capable

HomeWorks QSX Keypad

In-wall touch keypad, programmable button layouts

Sunnata Companion Switch

3-way / 4-way pairing without traveler wire

Programmed Scenes

Four to eight presets, programmed with you in the room.

Default scenes are pointless — every household uses lighting differently. We sit with you for 30-45 minutes after install, walk through the day, and dial in scenes that match what you actually do: where you cook, where you read, when the lights need to go down on the kids without losing the hallway.

Common starting set: Welcome (entry + hallway full), Cooking (kitchen full, dining 60%), Dinner (kitchen 40%, dining warm 80%, accent on), Movie (entertainment 15%, kitchen off, hallway path 30%), Bed (everything off except hallway 10%), Goodbye (everything off, hallway 100% for 60s then off).

FAQ

Smart lighting questions, straight answers.

Caseta is the retrofit-friendly wireless line — it talks over RF to a small hub, swaps in for existing dimmers without rewiring, and is the right call for most existing homes up to ~50 controlled loads. RadioRA 2 (and the higher-end HomeWorks) is hardwired-leaning, designed for whole-home programming, occupancy sensors, keypads in every room, and centralized racks. New construction or major remodels with 50+ zones → RadioRA / HomeWorks. Existing single-family retrofit → Caseta is almost always the answer.

Yes, but the dimmer has to be LED-rated and the bulb has to be dimmable. Lutron Caseta dimmers handle most modern dimmable LEDs cleanly. Cheaper non-Lutron dimmers paired with cheap LEDs cause flicker, hum, and pop-on behaviour — half of our "fix the flicker" service calls are mismatched LED + dimmer. We size the dimmer to the actual load and confirm bulb compatibility before installing.

Smart bulbs work — Philips Hue, LIFX, Sengled — but only when the wall switch is left ON. The moment someone flips the switch off, the bulb loses power and can't respond to the app. Real solution for a household is a smart dimmer or smart switch (controls every bulb on the circuit), not smart bulbs alone. Smart bulbs make sense in lamps or specific accent fixtures, not for room lighting.

A scene is a one-button preset that sets multiple lights to specific levels — "Movie" turns the entertainment room to 15%, dims the kitchen, off the hallway. Pico remotes let you fire scenes from any wall. For Caseta, we typically program 3-6 scenes per home (Welcome, Cooking, Dinner, Movie, Bed, Goodbye). For RadioRA homes, scene programming spans 20-50 zones and runs from in-wall keypads.

Yes. Caseta and RadioRA both integrate with all three major ecosystems via the Lutron app and bridge. Once paired, voice commands ("Alexa, set kitchen to 50%") and routines that span lighting + locks + thermostats work end to end. We do the ecosystem pairing as part of the install, not as a separate visit.

A typical Bay Area Caseta retrofit lands in the $1,800-$6,500 range — depends on dimmer count, Pico remote count, fan controllers, and whether the existing wiring has neutrals at every switch (some older homes need workaround dimmers or a neutral pull). We quote per-room with a fixed scope after a site walkthrough; no per-switch billing surprises mid-job.
